Tag 4 / Day 4
Am heutigen Nachmittag stand Alcatraz auf der Liste. Da ich beim ersten Mal die Nachttour gemacht hatte und nur im Zellentrakt war, wollte ich mir dieses Mal den Außenbereich anschauen. Auch mit dem Hintergedanken, die Skyline in der Dämmerung zu sehen. Aber dazu später.
Da die Tour nach Alcatraz erst am Nachmittag startet, hatte ich überlegt, was ich denn am Vormittag mache. Ich hatte mich dazu entschlossen zum Alamo Square mit den Painted Ladies zu fahren und danach in den Mission Dolores Park. Aber wie man das so kennt, erstens kommt es anders und zweitens als man denkt.
Der Alamo Square war vor drei Jahren leider eine reine Baustelle. Daher konnte ich damals weder den Park noch die tolle Aussicht auf die Stadt genießen. Das war nun anders. Die Baumaßnahmen sind vorbei und der Park erstrahlt wieder in einem tollen Grün. Die obligatorischen Fotos der Painted Ladies durften natürlich nicht fehlen. Ich hatte mich dann auf den Rasen gesetzt und die Aussicht auf die Stadt genossen. Ich finde so etwas ehrlich gesagt faszinierend. Egal in welcher Stadt man ist. Hat diese einen Park mitten in der Stadt und man hat einen tollen Ausblick, kann man schon eine Weile daran festhängen. So ist es mir dieses Mal auch passiert. Es war dort sehr ruhig, man konnte das herliche Wetter und die Aussicht ohne Störungen genießen. Also habe ich beschlossen, dort zu bleiben und nicht zum Mission Dolores Park zu fahren. So habe ich dann bis ca. 13 Uhr die Zeit mit Musik hören und Buch lesen verbracht um dann mit dem Bus zum Ferry Building zu fahren.
Am Ferry Building war heute Farmers Market. Ein Haufen Stände mit Obst und Gemüse. Im Ferry Building selber war es extrem voll. Man merkt hier deutlich, dass Wochenende ist. In der Woche war es nicht mal annähernd so voll.
Ich habe mir dann ein mittleres Softeis gegönnt. Leider auch in unseren europäischen Maßstäben mittelgroß. 😉 Aber leider auch teuer. Über $5. Dennoch war es sehr gut.
Wenn es an solchen Tagen so voll ist, ist es fast unmöglich eine freie Toilette zu finden. Weder im Ferry Building noch am Pier 39. Also musste ich durchhalten bis ich auf Alcatraz war.
Die Fähre fuhr uns dann um 15.50 Uhr ohne Umwege zur Insel. Von der Nachttour von vor drei Jahren bin ich davon ausgegangen, dass wir noch eine Runde um die Insel drehen und habe mich daher auf die rechte Seite des Schiffes gesetzt. Aber da habe ich dann schon den ersten Unterschied zur Nachttour erlebt. Bei den Tagestouren wird die Anlegestelle direkt angesteuert. Es wird keine Runde um die Insel gedreht.
Wie erwähnt wollte ich mich dieses Mal dem Außenbereich widmen. Man kann doch an recht viele Stellen gelangen. Vieles ist zwar dennoch abgesperrt, aber man kann einen guten Eindruck bekommen, wie es damals hier aussah. An vielen Stellen wo mal Gebäude standen und jetzt Ruinen sind, wurden nun Gärten errichtet. Ich denke man kann das auch gut auf den Bildern erkennen. An einigen Stellen, besonders der stadtzugewandten Seite, sieht man noch die zusammengefallenen Gebäude.
Hier hatte ich mir auch schon einen guten Platz gesucht, der ideal für Fotos der Skyline in der Dämmerung bzw. im Halbdunkel geeignet war. Leider haben mir die Parkranger einen Strich durch die Rechnung gemacht. Diese Abschnitte wurden nämlich gegen 18 Uhr für Besucher gesperrt. Das gilt auch für das ehemalige Baseballfeld im Innenhof. Daher weiß ich jetzt auch, warum wir damals das Baseballfeld nicht gesehen hatten. Dennoch war es toll noch einmal auf dieser Insel zu sein. Ich kann jetzt definitiv sagen, dass ich dort so ziemlich alles gesehen habe.
Unsere Fähre zurück fuhr kurz vor 19 Uhr. Es war etwas schwierig auf einem schwankenden Schiff gute Nachtfotos zu machen, aber ich denke, dass sie dennoch gut geworden sind.
Zurück an Land wollte ich im Hard Rock Café etwas essen. Beim Vorbeilaufen habe ich gesehen, dass der Außenbereich fast leer war. Innen war es zwar etwas voller, aber immer noch genug Platz für eine Person. Möchte man meinen.... Da man sich ja hier in den USA nicht einfach irgendwo hinsetzt sondern einen Platz zugewiesen bekommt, musst ich mich am Eingang "anmelden". Hier hat man mir aber gesagt, dass ich 45 Minuten warten müsste. 😲Ich habe die Dame etwas ungläubig angeguckt und gesagt, dass ich dann woanders essen werde...
Gott sei Dank wollte Applebee's mich bedienen. Ich hab zwar an der Bar gesessen, aber das ist ja egal. Bestellt habe ich mir einen Whisky Bacon Burger und ein amerikanisches IPA. Ein IPA ist ein helles, aber stärker eingebrautes Pale Ale. Hat fruchtig gerochen, war aber sehr herb. War lecker. Aber auch teuer. $10 für ein Glas....
Dennoch war alles sehr lecker und ich bin gut gesättigt weiter. Ich wollte nämlich noch ein paar Nachtaufnahmen der Lombard Street machen. Da es schon kurz vor 20 Uhr war dachte ich, dass das Cable Car eine gute Alternative wäre... Ja... Die Zahl 45 habe ich doch heute schonmal gehört!? Japp, auch hier 45 Minuten Wartezeit. Da hatte ich keine Lust drauf und bin gelaufen. 4 Blocks mit einer Steigung... Mein Gott... Ich habe es dann aber nach gut 20 Minuten geschafft. Völlig kaputt. Da war das Radfahren nichts dagegen. Aber es hat sich mehr als gelohnt. Die Bilder sollten für sich sprechen. Ich habe erst ein paar Fotos von oben nach unten gemacht, bin dann runter um von unten nach oben noch einige zu machen.
Dann war aber auch genug für heute und ich bin zurück zum Hotel. Gott sei dank gings nur noch bergab.
Today afternoon I had Alcatraz on my list. Because I did the night tour at my first time here and just could see the cellhouse, this time I wanted to do the day tour and see the outdoor area. Also with the thoughts to see the skyline at sunset and night. But later to this.
Because the tour to Alcatraz starts afternoon I thought about what I could do at the rest of the day. I decided to see the Alamo Square with the Painted Ladies and then to see Mission Dolores Park. But as you know things never turn out the way you expect.
Three years ago when I was here the first time the Alamo Square was rebuild. So I couldn't see the park nor the the beautiful view of the city. Now it is different. The rebuild is done and the park is green again. The pictures of the Painted Ladies needn't to be missed. After that I sat down on the gras and enjoyed the view of the city. For me it is very fascinating to have a park in a city and have an awesome view on that city. It doesn't matter which city. Important is such a park in the city. So you can losse a lot of time there. It happened to me. It was so quiet and you could enjoy the beautiful weather and the awesome view. Because of this I decided to stay here for a while and don't go to Mission Dolores. I used the time to read a book and listen to music. I did it 'till 1 pm and tokk the bus to the Ferry Building.
At the Ferry Building there was today a Farmers Market. A lot boothes with vegetable and fruits. In the Ferry Building were a lot of people. You can recognise that it is weekend. At the weekdays there weren't so much people.
I ate a medium ice cream. This time medium was the same as medium in Europe😉. But also expensive. About $5 but very good. To find a free restroom at days like today it is almost impossible. Neither at the Ferry Building nor at Pier 39. So I had to wait 'till we were on Alcatraz. The ferry drove us at 3.50 pm without any detour to the island. Three years ago when I did the night tour the ferry drove around the island. So I thought that we will do this again. And with this in mind I sat down on the right side of the ferry. But this was the first difference to the night tour I recognised. At the day tours they are driving directly to the landing. They don't do a drive around the island.
As I told this time I wanted to see the outdoor area. You can walk to a lot of areas around the island. But there are also a many of them which are closed for public. But you can recognise in a very good way how it looked like in the past. At some areas where buildings were there are now some gardens. I guess you can see it on the pictures. At some areas especially on the side to the city, you can see the collapsed buildings.
Here I found a good place to take pictures of the skyline at sunset and night. But the rangers thwarted my plans. These trails were closed at 6 pm for public. Also the baseball field will be closed. And now I know why I didn't could see the field at the first time when I was here. But it was great to be back on the island again. And now I can say that I have seen almost everything of Alcatraz.
Our ferry drove back at 7 pm. It was very difficult to take pictures at night on a moving ship. But I guess some are pretty good.
Back on landI wanted to eat something at the Hard Rock Café. At walking by I saw that the outdoor area was almost empty. Inside it was a fuller but in my mind enough space for another person. That the thing you'll guess... At the entry they told me that I have to wait about 45 minutes. 😲 I looked at the woman unbelieving and told her that I will eat somewhere else.
Thank god that Applebee's wanted to serve me something to eat. I sat at the bar but it was pretty ok and it doesn't matter. I ordered a Whisky Bacon Burger and an american IPA. It smelled fruity but was pretty harsh. Was delicious. But very expensive. $10 per glas...
But everything was so delicious and I went off saitisfied. I wanted to take some pictures at night of the Lombard Street. Because it was past 8 pm I thought it would be clever to take the Cabel Car. But I swear that I heart the numer 45 somewhere else!? Yes. Another waiting time of 45 minutes. I don't wanted that. So I walked. 4 blocks with a steep hill... man.... I've done it after approx. 20 minutes. Completely exhausted. Driving with the bike was nothing like this. But it was worth it. I guess the picture will show it. First I took some pictures from above and then I went down to take some from below. And that was everything I wanted to do today and walked back to my hotel. Thank god ist was just downhill.
